Horus Heresy - The Sagyar Mazan! GG's Shattered Legions project.
When Malevolence finally dropped I couldn't wait to get my Chorgorian Brotherhood up and running [all puns intended!] In previous posts you will have seen how my 'wheels and wings' force has terrorised some, and fallen flat on its face against others.
But another great part of the White Scars section in Malevolence was the background of the Legion in their role as pioneers, casting themselves out into the deep void scouting for routes for the following crusade fleets.
The very nature of the legion at their inception was for long range, extended recognisance missions. The Scars 'pre-Khagan' cognition being the 'Star Hunters' a name quite apt for a legion who would 'hunt' the stars as pathfinders for the compliance fleets.
Of the new units unveiled in Malevolence the Falcons Claws are those which epitomise this role as pathfinders. A Fast Attack choice for White Scars these pseudo-scouts excel at forward deployment and decapitating the enemy command structure. They are heavily armed if lightly armoured and benefit from precision strikes and Hatred (characters).
Despite all being armed with lighting claws they're actually quite cheap points wise. The only ranged weapons available to the squad are bolt pistols so their intended use is clearly to engage in close with the enemy and assault as quickly as possible.
I've built a full squad of 10, half with lightning claws and the other half with bolt pistols and PowerPunchDaggers! [power axes]. My 'champion' [10/10 for originality there Forgeworld] has a thunder hammer and lightning claw aaand... a cyber-hawk! That's right, this is the ONLY other way to get a cyber-hawk into your army outside a stock Praetor.
I've gone with an old white/grey Star Hunter recon camo scheme with minimal red. These guys are trying the sneaky sneaky after all..
Some of you may have noticed that the Sagyar Mazan rite of war is a Shattered Legion concept. I didn't want to build a war torn formation similar to the Istvann Survivors rite and so went back to the early days in the Vth legion's history and considered their oldest and closest allies, the Luna Wolves.
Not only would painting Luna Wolves be cool, the scheme would also fit alongside my scars. The cold grey/white with black metal trim to compliments both the white/grey camo of the Falcon's and the cool blue/white of the rest of my White Scars.
Having loyalist Sons of Horus, [er, Luna Wolves sorry!] would also be a cool thing to do.
I built an assault squad kitted out for close combat killing. Sgt with powerfist and 2 other power swords. I wanted to take as much advantage of the Merciless Fighters rule as possible. These guys will be led by a Legion Champion, whose master-crafted Paragon blade and WS6 make him a formidable killer.

After getting these guys all done I managed a pick up game against a good friend of mine running Vlka Fenryka. Below the Vth legion Seekers and Destroyers line up to push the Space wolves into the jaws of the flanking Falcons Claws and Luna Wolf assault marines.
After some furious combat the Falcons Claws move towards the enemy Mortis dreadnought clicking the primers on their melta-bombs as they approach.
A hard won fight but the Sagyar Mazan force claimed its first victory!
Below is a sneak peak of something I've been working on, a Chogorian pattern Land Speeder. We all know how the White Scars like to heavy modify the engines of their warmachines for maximum power and manoeuvrability. And what better way to do that than to add two huge Storm Talon engines!
I'll be building a pair of these to run as a squadron both toting Plasma cannons, Volkite Calivars and 2 hunter killer missiles. Keep tuned for updates!
