Horus Heresy - Malevolence - Book 8 Preview

Evening everyone welcome to a sneak peak inside the new Horus Heresy: Malevolence Book 8 in the series, which goes on pre-order tomorrow.  There has been a sneak peak on the Warhammer Community page but we thought here at the blog you'd appreciate a preview from us hobby types.

*SPOILIER ALERT* NO RULES HERE!

Sorry if that may disappoint some but it's only fair to those that spend their hard earned pennies on the book that the rules should remain 'exclusive' to those that have paid for the privilege.  I'm sure they can be found elsewhere across the blogosphere but not here.

Onto the Book!!  It is as always a fantastic book.  Beautifully presented as all the Horus Heresy series are.  My one gripe is the same that hits us every-time.  The ink doesn't set well on these larger books and on the red print pages especially.  Or those with heavy colouring.  As a result on a few of the pages they're stuck together and therefore the binding hasn't been undertaken properly and the pages become damaged effectively when you open them.

The contents page is already out there and as you can see there is lots in the book.  Is it worth the extra year wait?  I'm not sure some will agree.  It's no secret that the loss of Alan Bligh hit the Forgeworld team hard.  It has hit them in areas you may not think.
I know Simon Egan used Alan as a sounding board for his sculpting using Alan's fathomless knowledge to help him figure out the minute details of why a Primarch may or may not carry a certain weapon a certain way etc.  His innate ability to reel off information about ancient civilisations and how that was reflected in the Horus Heresy and the Imperium of Man-kind was something to behold and he could captivate anyone in a room with his knowledge.

I for one miss the man just a nice bloke never mind the impact he had across the Heresy series and it's nice to see Anju and the team acknowledge this in the afterword.

Some of the artwork int book is staggering.  The mapping alone just stands out for me a highlight.  It plain to see that they pulled out a lot of stops to bring this to production despite the delay of over a year.

The book is broken down much like previous books into a build up of the campaigns over all and the back ground that leads to the various major battles and the legions and forces involved.

The colour plates are everything you can expect and none of them disappoint.  For anyone collecting a Blood Angels or White Scars army these are going to help with you choosing and painting your forces no end.

The Blood Angels are represented in the book as we've not seen them before.  Anyone that has read Fear To Tread will know of the first order and some of the various units within the legion.  If you're not then again you're in for a real treat as the book breaks these down and gives an insight into the background and lore that will allow you to bring so much character to your army NOT owning this book would be a mistake.

The colour plate below shows the beautiful Blood Angels Leviathan Dreadnought, and whilst this is a colour plate the model itself is just awesome.  And the goof thing is that the studio will be revisiting the Leviathan for all of the Legions and everyone will get a Legion specific Leviathan as the Heresy miniatures move forward.

As I said with the Blood Angels if you want to start a White Scars army or you have one, owning this book will make your ability to bring new units and character to your army ten times easier.  The riders of the Khan in this book finally come to life and if this book doesn't make you want to have a 1000pts of screaming Legionaries on jet-bikes to add to any force as Allies I'll be surprised.

Again there is some great back story to the origins of the legion as Pioneer Companies striving out in from of the Great Crusade and forging paths for the rest of Crusade looking for the Primarch at the vanguard of the Emperor's forces.

The colour plates for the White Scars legion heraldry is fantastic and will inspire those who have them already and others, like me, to consider them as a force to paint and play with.  I know JohnGG will be loving this book!!

Campaigns are set out well with full back stories and all of the usual additional rules and missions you would expect.  Its fair to say that like the rules we don't want to give it all away and leave something for you guys to look forwards to. 😜

Fir the most part a lot of people have been looking forwards to the new Daemon rules.  I have to say that this part of the book is lacking in colour plates and any shots of new models.
*At least this blog member can't see any*
Which I think personally is a loss for Forgeworld and a bit of a trick missed but I guess they have to keep something on the back burner, like us 😉, to keep the interest alive.  There's a lot of cool stuff in the Daemons section and it is mainly rules heavy allowing you to field bad guys from all of the realms within a different type of army that mean you can be very fluid in how you build your army.  I can see a lot of people fielding some really great armies mixing different miniatures from across the FW/GW range and I look forwards to facing some of them across the table top.

Talons have a had a revisit in this book and some units have been tweaked with the introduction of the new Ares Super Heavy gunship.  Taking the Orion based chassis and adding a massive cannon to the front of it.  It's described very similar to the US Airforce's famous A10 Thunderbolt where the aircraft has been built around the cannon.  Let that sink in. 😜

Finally the anti-Daemon gucci toys that allow you to really take the fight to the Daemons.  Now bare in mind at this point in the Heresy the only forces loyal to the Emperor that are able to normally take the fight to the Daemon or Psyker are the Sisters or Custodians per-say.  These news toys allow you to expand that to your legionaries and a new unit too of Terminators that you can add to really get in the Daemons faces.....or Thousand Sons for those Space Wolf players out there that want to grind those axes!

So there you have it. Whilst not a rules dump that others may have wanted I hope it gives you an honest insight of what to expect forth book before you buy it.  I believe it's well worth the investment and I don't play Blood Angels, White Scars or Daemons....but I might do now 😏👍
