The Horus Heresy - Legions of Legions

Hi again.

As we move into the start of the new year, I, like many wargamers, have been considering my progress over the last year and critically evaluating where I'm at with projects and ultimately where I'd like to be moving forwards.

It's no secret that I'm a hobby butterfly, I get excited by new prospects which draw me away from projects. This year has been no exception, having started (in March) to run regular events based in the Horus Heresy and Great Crusade eras I've found a lot of hobby time has been siphoned off into either preparing materials and player packs for events or getting scenery ready for events. As you can imagine this is no mean feat, not having a gaming club or such as the foundation of these events everything has had to be made from scratch as a start up. Thankfully I did have assistance from Col. Hertford and my event partner @the_funk_messiah in getting stuff done and help on the days the events ran but needless to say that the year was very much punctuated by furious scenery building and painting.

I did also manage to attend some events last year. It was excellent getting out and about and meeting old and new friends alike and rolling dice in the age of darkness. I found the events immensely useful as it gave me a firm deadline to get hobby projects done ready for battle. It the most part I've been making and playing Talons of the Emperor this year, growing a modest allied detachment into a full Onslaught force. My most recent additions have taken the force from around 3000pts to 4000pts, however many of the new additions are merely built and base painted - they still need a lot of love to get them to the same state as their brethren.

So looking forward I feel I really need to embrace the butterfly and hash out a plan to get my various 'concept' armies off to a running start. currently I have the following in some shape or form;

  • Thousand Sons (infantry heavy)
  • Vlka Fenryka Dekk Tra (drop assault force) - Wulfen list represented by the Last of the Serrated Sun Word Bearers rules
  • Legio Astraman Secutarii  (infantry, tanks and cybernetica)
  • Night Lords (flyer heavy)
  • Graian Mechanicum (mainly cybernetica)
  • Nephilim host
  • Imperial Fists Zone Mortalis force (all terminator armour)
  • Imperial Fists Fury of the Ancients force (characters and dreadnoughts)
  • Megarachnid kill-clade
  • Keylekid hunting party
  • Legio Custodes (manily infantry and dreadnoughts)
  • Questoris Knights House Krast
  • Questorius Knights House (unsure) but exclusively Cerastus patterns - maybe Hyperion
  • Questoris Mechanicum endentured Knight House (unsure) - maybe Raven
  • Legio Astraman battle maniple
  • various bits of different alien races in various forms of kit - built
So as you can see that's a lot of 'stuff' to wade through. Some are easier to schedule than others, for example the Nephilim, Megarachnids and the Keylekid all need to be done to 1000pts by 4th May for my Xenocide I event (tickets are still available through Eventbrite). The Nephilim need paint, the Megarachnids need final touches and bases and the Keylekid need building from scratch using the base models from Mierce Miniatures.

What I really need to sort is the Legion of Legions I have haunting my display cabinets, so this is where you come in. What I would like to do is fashion a minimum requirement allied detachment for each of the above (excluding the ones that sit outside of the AoD FOC) and complete that in it's entirety before moving on to the next, essentially allowing me to use them before the army is completed so I can learn the finer points of fielding the force on the table.

What I would like you, dear readers, to do it comment below which force you be most keen to see on the blog.

I look forward to seeing what you all think.
